Wasabi is one of the most famous ingredients in Japanese cuisine. Its strong and particular flavor makes it truly unique and typical of any other food of Western gastronomy. At table the wasabi comes in the form of a pasta of green color, served in a bowl in small quantities in which to sushi or sashimi (raw fish). Its flavor is very different from the usual ones of Western cuisine, a spicy detail that affects the palate rather than the tongue, as is usually the case.
Wasabi is prepared by processing a Japanese root obtained from Wasabia japonica or Japanese Radish, a plant belonging to the Brassicacee family, the same as radish, mustard and cabbage.
The root is grated with a special tool and then processed to obtain a paste.
Wasabi is available on the market in the form of pasta or powder, but in the latter case it is used as a spice to be added as an ingredient to prepare snacks or biscuits. To form a paste, however, it is necessary to dissolve it in water.

According to tradition, wasabi possesses many beneficial properties. It is an excellent digestive, possesses antibacterial properties and helps to prevent intoxication. For this reason, it is consumed with raw fish, which can even mitigate the strong smell. According to some studies, wasabi also had anticoagulant effects and would be able to inhibit aggregation of platelets, resulting in the same effect as aspirin. Additionally, the plant from which the wasabi is derived belongs to the cruciferous family and is rich in isothiocyanate, useful for treating the tumors. The wasabi would therefore be able to prevent the formation of gastrointestinal tumors, breast, stomach and colon.
A typical sushi-based dinner usually begins with the consumption of wasabi, soy sauce and ginger. First you pour into your plate the soy sauce in which sushi pieces are called. Those who find too delicate soy sauce can add the wasabi for a somewhat smarter taste. Finally, the ginger can be used to freshen the mouth between a sushi and another so as to purify the taste buds and taste the flavors and tastes best.

Interesting, I had a misconception about where it came form. I am however not a big fan :P

I have never had fresh wasabi. Would love to try it. I heard it is rather expensive. Otherwise, I love the powdered form! I love the heat.
