PROFESSOR CHINUALUMOGU ACHEBE

Chinua Achebe popularly known was born on 16th Nov 1930 in Ogidi, Anambra state to Mr Isaiah Okafo Achebe by Mrs Janet Anaenechi Achebe who were both christains after been coverted to the protestant church mission. This has help them to raised their children in the way of the lord. Most especially Chinualumogu which means may God fight on my behalf.

He started his education in 1936 at Saint Philips central school. He was promoted from the religious class for young children to higher class when he got recognition for his level of intelligence.

When he was 12 years old, he went to Nekede some miles away from Owerri where he started schooling at the central school where his older brother was a teacher. In 1944, he sat for the entrance examination qhich was a mandate to gain admission into aecondary scho and was accepted by Dennis Memorial Grammer School in Onitsha and the Government College in Umuahia.

He received a double promotion in his first year and only spend 4 years in secondary school instead of the 5 years standard. While he was in school just like Julius Nyerere, chinua read extensively. He explore the school library and read a lot of books such as;

  • Gulliver's travel
  • David copperfield
  • Up from slavery
    And many more.

In 1948, when the university college was established( now university of ibadan). Achebe was one of the first intake and was given a bursary to study medicine. After reading a lot of European literature about Africa, he decided to drop medicine for English, History and Theology and decided to become a writer.

He wrote his first short story while he was still in school titled In a village church. After graduating in 1953 with a second-class degree, he was unsettled for not attaining the highest level and he later returned back to Ogidi. He taught for some months at Oba and later moved to Lagos in 1954 where he work in the Nigerian Broadcasting Service(NBC).

If a life worth emulating, then chinua is the man we are talking about. He was a great writer and teacher. He was married to Chinwe Okoli and the union was blessed with four children. He was regarded as father of modern Africa writing. In 2004 and 2011 respectively, he rejected the Nigerian Honour Commander of the federal republic saying;

I have watched particularly the chaos in my own state of Anambra where a small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. I am appalled by the brazenness of this clique and the silence, if not connivance, of the Presidency.

Some of his Novel are;

  • Things fall apart
  • A man of the people
  • Arrow of God
  • No longer at Ease

He never receive the Nobel Prize Award and when asked about the award, he said

My position is that the Nobel Prize is important. But it is a European prize. It’s not an African prize. Literature is not a heavyweight championship.

On 21st of March 2013, Africa and the world at large lost this great man.

Last week, Africa lost another legend Kofi Atta Annan. May His Gentle Soul Rest in Perfect Peace.

With Love,
@Oxygen02
