Bah Humbug, a Freewrite Poem
What kind of a prompt is "gutless"
this very week of all weeks?
Determination is in short supply
who needs of it to speak?
The shopping is done, the cleaning begun
my will to decorate nill
I know not where the Christmas village is
Perhaps I donated it to goodwill
I have no wreaths, no poisettas
My xmas tree eighteen inches tall
It will be carried from room to room
the brunt of many a funny fall
Here's the problem:
One moment I am determined
the next I am bereft
remembering those who are missing
then cherishing those who are left
But:
My fridge is stocked to overflowing
much cooking still to be done
My love of all these people
will get me off my duff
The bellies will soon all be full
the presents all unwrapped
We'll have made merry in several households
and some of us will get fat.

I spent a lot more than five minutes on it, truth be told.

Such rhyming prowess I cannot follow
for my efforts, they will just ring hollow
so my poetic impulses I'll restrain
and your sensibilities I’ll not pain
but I’ll take this opportunity to say
have a very happy Christmas day.
