My life as a freelancer #3 : Best online learning sites for rookie developers

in #education6 years ago

In my previous posts, I have mentioned continuing my business life as a freelance. It was not just the way of doing business, but I have also needed a change in my work, and I have decided to use it on development. I've worked on software for various projects before, but it was something else to build my whole life on this job, and I wasn't good enough for that. It may seem more logical for most people to continue in the field of action, but for me, the risks are an essential part of life, and if your inner voice tells you to go in another direction, you need to listen to it. Okay, well, I'm thinking about progress in development, but I'm not good enough. What should I do? At this point, I have two options. Either I start college again and study on the computer or software, or develop myself. As a someone with a very long education life, it was not very logical for me to go to university again both financially and regarding time. Also, universities give you a solid foundation, but the main issue is what you add to this foundation. It comes back and developing itself and preparing a solid portfolio. That's why I chose the shortcut this time, but the hard way, and I decided to educate myself. I have searched for platforms where I can improve myself and learn development, and I would like to talk about these platforms in this article.

Coursera

Coursera, a combination of the two, came across me when I was thinking about college or online education. This platform, where you can get incredible training from the world's most important universities and institutions, is the basis of my self-education process. I have chosen two specialisations on the platform, and I have started. Coursera is open to anyone who wants to learn from quality academics and is free of charge. If you only want to certify your education and get a certificate, you are paying a certain amount.

EdX

edX is a platform that brings together those who want to learn and improve themselves with the academic staff of universities like Coursera. There are courses from both universities and major institutions such as Microsoft and IBM on the site. On the platform the training is open to all, there is a small payment option for those who want to receive a certificate.

Codecademy

If you want to learn a software language, Codecademy is one of the training sites that should be included in your bookmarks. The system does not like watching videos like others and leaving you on your own, but instead giving you a mini-mini-task where you can explain the details in the language and then apply them immediately. The best part of the site has its own text editor and terminal. Thus, even if you do not have a proper computer, you can work with the browser.

Udacity

Udacity is a platform that brings together those who are interested in software especially with the leading names of the industry. When you complete application-oriented online training, it is aimed that you have a portfolio that will help you with your job applications. It is ideal for those who want to advance in the field of development, which is very useful. However, there is no free access to classes on the site.

Lynda

Lynda is one of the oldest online training sites. This training platform, which is growing more and more with the purchase of LinkedIn, allows you to access training in many areas, not just the software. The system is paid, but you have a monthly free use when you register. You can explore the tutorials you want in this period and complete them with hard work.

Skillshare

Skillshare, as the name suggests, is an online education platform that specialises in specific areas and builds a system based on sharing the experiences and skills of the employees in the sector. You can improve yourself with lessons from experienced people from around the world. Although the membership is paid, the prices are quite affordable compared to other sites. There are also many free courses on the site.

Udemy

Udemy, like Skillshare, is an online training platform that you can learn from the courses created by qualified people in the field. Udemy's advantage is that thanks to its extensive network of educators, you can find whatever you are looking for. Although Udemy is a paid site, it offers incredible discounts from time to time and allows you to access the education you want.

Apart from these, there are also some training platforms, but most of them very new and so I didn't want to include here. If you have similar platforms that you use, you can leave them as comments and contribute to more people learning.
