NEW STEEMIANS TAKE NOTE - Don't Break the 3 Golden Steemit Rules (IMPORTANT READ FOR TADPOLES & FISH-FRY)
Steemit is a Great Community
Don't mess it up. You will find this platform full of crypto smart, kick-ass creatives; developers, theorists, writers, philosophers who are generally smarter, richer and probably better looking than you. (Maybe not.) They may be able to help you find yourself on this mortal coil. It's a nice place, so be nice and don't be annoying. Oh yeah, the rules.
1 NO SPAM or plagiarism
This includes posting a single link to a youtube post which is not your work. The same goes with posting photos, web articles and random porn which you did not make or star in yourself. Ridiculous offers to pyramid schemes don't go down well. Copying someone else's work and passing it off as your own is not worthy of an upvote, is deplorable, despicable and in most cases, illegal too. If you copy content from a website @cheetah will come and find your content and tell everyone it's copied. It's not 100% infallible, but if you keep doing it you will arouse the attentions of @steemcleaners who will put you one their lists of shame. This could affect your reputation and your reward payout. If you do get flagged down, heed the warning, don't lose your head. Everybody makes mitsakes. << < did you see what I did there ? uh
2 Stay Classy (Ron Burgundy)
NEVER EVER ASK for upvotes, resteems follows or comments. This is considered steem anathema by most; (that's something that someone really dislikes.) It comes across as clammy, clingy, desperate and a bit spammy. Don't try and be clever by adding a footer to your posts which say upvote, follow me, resteem. This is automated spambola! possibly the worst kind.
3 Don't Hassle
If you've got great content and you tag it properly you will become the baitball. You can't really expect the Blues, Humpbacks and Orcas to come flocking to your feed just because you wrote GREAT POST as a comment on every single one of their posts, even though you have no idea what a private node running on a Hexacore Xeon is. (I've got a Hexacore Xeon btw, they are amazing; , but I don't have a private node), yet.
DO THIS INSTEAD
Write about What you Know
Almost anything can be interesting and you'll be surprised. If cooking is your thing, share your recipes.. if it's art, show some, talk about it, share your ideas. Steemit loves photography, even from your smartphone. If your photos are good share them & you might be surprised, but try and write something about them, why you took them, where you were. Steemians love camera data and picture data (EXIF). If you are going to write about crypto, please know what you're saying ! It's an educated crowd out there, so bring something of your own personality to it. We all know today's price of bitcoin & steem. But what about Triassic Fossils ?
Get Involved
When you comment, add something positive to the conversation. Constructive criticism is welcome. constructive being the key word. Trolling will get you sent to the corner. Remember this is not a chatroom. What you say will be remembered. There are plenty of chatrooms to engage with fellow steemians. If you are lucky enough to be invited to a discord channel, dip your toes in. A lot of back room business goes on in the chat. In fact here's one for you. If you like STREET PHOTOGRAPHY, come and join us, say hello, introduce yourself, share your posts, ideas..ask a question ! CLICK HERE TO JOIN
Lone Patrol by @outerground STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Get out There
Follow people who you genuinely like, not because they have Xteentohousand followers and a wallet steem value of $1billion. Upvote the posts which resonate with you. Comment where you have something to say, remember, saying love it or great post without qualification does come across as a bit spammy and will be duly noted. You may even get challenged and flagged. Ouch
A Bit of Markdown Goes a long way
There's a markdown styling guide at the bottom of your post window.. It's really easy and turns your paragraph of gobbldy-gook into elegant, readable, magazine worthy articles. Headers, emphasis, bit of bold here and there. The odd carriage return can help space things out. Pictures are great. Remember though, unless it's public domain or you made it, it belongs to someone.
NASA IMAGES ARE FREE
As are millions of other public domain images available on the internet. Better still if you use your own. if you can't, these three links will provide you with more free, public domain images than you can ever use. All images in this post are from the following 2 links
.
https://www.nasa.gov/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/britishlibrary/
and you'll probably find a million free ideas here too
https://www.stockfreeimages.com/
Hahaha this is so true. I never have to put one.
@diabolika I will remember you said that & if I ever find automated spambola at the end of any of your posts, I will personally bring it to your attention ;)
your upvote and resteems will be kindly appreciated
And I will do the same to you mr high above the ground. 😊
I probably do them all away ! feel free to pull me up if I'm not playing by the Queensbury's
Great post!
Oops - not supposed to say that...
This is really well-written and explains a lot, wish I'd had it on my desktop when I first joined! Some of this is intuitive, and some you pick up as you explore, but it would be nice to have it all laid out beforehand.
But maybe that would discourage exploring and learning?
Hope you are well!
Great post!
Love it!
thanks @brightongreg. All well thanks. something for the newbies. Crytpo is a journey, Steemit is also a journey. you kind of have to learn the hard way but I think it's always nice to lay out a guide for newcomers. Help them avoid obvious mistakes and also encourage the use of one's brain .. Great Comment love it btw
now you see in the context of... yes I read the post and it's a great post & Love it, suddenly take on epic proportions of encouraging feedback !
I agree with everything in this blog post except "Nasa images are free" LOL Americans pay ~20 billion dollars per year for Nasa to fake those photos...
Thanks @ramseyman.. and that's exactly why they're free !! Lol, they've been paid for handsomely 3 times over so you kind of own them anyway.. The British Library images are brilliantly old fashioned and are simply out of copyright ! we didn't mention the prelinger archives either.. a lot of paid for propaganda, which is also now free to use
Hehe... that's one of the humans manipulations, after politics, religion and media.
Free things that are in fact paid with a lot.
I enjoyed reading that. I am only a two month old Steemian but it is nice to know that going with my gut appears to be the correct way. You have enforced what I was trying to achieve and it appears to be working for me. I am very happy with my progress so far. Thanks for posting @outerground: Followed upvoted and resteemed.
thanks for your reply @inseasia I'm glad you liked it. Of course it's only advisory based on my own experience. I hope you are enjoying the steem journey. While there are many shared experiences between steemians, everyone has their own learning curve to go through. May you long be steeming :)
Agree with each point you have mentioned here. This should be in the Steemit FAQs! :)
thanks @writerbro .. steemit is a journey and everyone's will be different but I think like any steep mountain, any guides are useful !!
