The shape of a front

in #blog8 years ago

When we are out in the sound teaching kite boarding lessons oftentimes we are on the edge of a frontal system. Especially in the Spring and Fall.

We have a unique vantage point out in the water to be able to watch the storms rolling in. When a storm rises up and you are land locked you often can't necessarily see it coming. As I have spent more time out on the water I have been able to see a lot of storms roll in. This one was one of my favorites.

I had to "run away" from this one to try to make it back to the dock (10 minute boat ride) with out getting wet. We arrived to the dock just as the clouds began to squeeze out the rain. Then we scrambled to take all the gear back to the shop before it all got drenched.

The angle of the cloud represents a temperature gradient and pressure gradient on the edge between high and low pressures. Its pretty amazing to witness the movement of weather systems with a front door seat.
