Pablo used the idea of an unknown God.
"The God who made the world and all the things that are in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by human hands."
God had established very clearly throughout the Old Testament-even though He gave the Israelites the models for the tabernacle and for the temple-that He would not dwell in a certain geographic location. Solomon recognized this truth in his dedicatory prayer of the temple. In the first book of the Kings, chapter 8, verse 27, we read the following: "But is it true that God will dwell on the earth, if the heavens and the heavens of heaven can not contain you? house that I have built? " Now, those men in the Old Testament realized that God the Creator, the living God, could not live in a building that had been built by men. Men live in a universe that God has made. Why then did they have the idea that they could create a building in which God would live? He went on, Paul speaking to the Athenians and told them here in verse 25:
"Nor is he honored by the hands of men, as if he needed something, for he is the one who gives everyone life, breath and all things."
Here, Pablo gave a masterful blow. He not only told them that God was the Creator, but He did not need anything from them either. And here they were, who had tried to build a temple for him. They brought their offerings to placate this unknown god. They wanted this unknown god to know they thought about Him. Then Paul told them that God did not need anything from them. God, on the other hand, is the one who gives. It provides everyone; It gives you everything you need. He gives his life, he gives his breath. He has given him the sun, the moon, and the stars. He has provided all the things.
These Athenians worshiped the sun. They said that Apollo was dragging his two-wheeled car across the sky, every day. But, Paul told them that this was not true and that the sun was something that God had created as a gift for human beings. The Creator is the living God and the giver of all things. By the way, it also gives us salvation. It not only gives us physical things, but also gives us spiritual gifts. And Paul continued speaking here in verse 26 and said:
"Of one blood He has made all the lineage of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has set before them the order of times and the limits of their habitation."
This issue of "one blood" has been given great importance and we believe that we must discard some erroneous notions here. A better translation would be the following: From one man he made all nations. God has created a single human family. But here there is no talk of a universal brotherhood. The only brotherhood that the Scripture recognizes, is the brotherhood of those who are united in Jesus Christ. What we do recognize is a brotherhood of sin, in the sense that we are all sinners. We are all from one family. We were all created by the same Creator. We are all sinners. Faced with the reality of evil, we are all equal.
This statement that Paul made was significant. He said that God had placed certain groups or human races in certain geographical locations. A sovereign God, in his omnipotence, has ordained history (that is, the times) and determined the limits (the exact places) for nations to inhabit. After all, the proud Greeks would have to admit that they were not the only privileged nation on earth. And when human beings have tried to trespass the limits set by the Creator, conflicts have occurred; both in nature and in human relationships.
