The third Russian New Year!
The first New Year in Russia, as well as all over the world, comes on the night of December 31 to January 1. The second is the Christmas of the Orthodox Christian church, on the night of 6 to 7 January. And the third New Year - from 13 to 14 January.
Until the Old New Year (this is how it is called this holiday), the houses are decorated with pine and spruce. Until that date, as a rule, the winter holidays of schoolchildren continue. The third New Year is no longer celebrated as noisily as the first. But ... and salutes and feasts in many families are not inferior to the Gregorian New Year.
Why?
Russia switched to the Gregorian calendar only on January 24, 1918 - it was one of the iconic attributes of the young Soviet power - the transition to a single calendar with Europe.
Before that, there was the Julian calendar in Russia. It is on it continues to celebrate Christmas and other Christian holidays Russian Orthodox Church. And the New Year from January 13 to January 14 - a kind of archaism, which the Russians continue to support for a hundred years as a joke.
Even earlier (from 1492) in Russia was the Byzantine calendar and the New Year began on September 1. Now this day - the beginning of the academic year in all educational institutions of Russia. And the ancient Slavs, before the Byzantine calendar, celebrated the beginning of the year in the spring - March 1.
That's why Russians are ready to celebrate every day, as the New Year))
