WHERE IS HOME?

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

I was born in a small village in the Northern Region of Ghana called Wulensi. When I was two years old, my parents moved and re-established a new life in Bimbilla (a small town a few miles away from Wulensi). Since I was so young, I now do not remember much about my life in Wulensi. But according to my mother, the land, at the time was highly unstable due to persistent disputes between two of the major tribes that were settled there. In other that I could have a peaceful and enabling environment to grow, my parents decided to relocate. The town of Bimbilla was quite lovely at the time and so my dad decided to build there. It was here I had my Primary and Junior High School education. As a child, I made lots of friends and can confidently say that I was privilege to have a better basic education than an average Ghanaian child.

When I was about 15 years old, I moved to Tamale, the capital of the Northern region to attend senior high school. The Tamale Senior High School was and still is one of the best in the country. Whiles there, I built a family and made great accomplishments. After senior high, I decided to stay in tamale so I could enroll into the University for Development Studies. Today, I have my first degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science but most importantly, I have found a new home. My grandparents and most of my extended family still live in Wulensi and I go there every once in a while to visit, it’s a great town now. I still consider the place my home town but honestly, not my home. As for Bimbilla, it has been consumed by anger and by fear. Fear that has sprouted from a chieftaincy dispute which has plagued the township for the past several years. The once peaceful and lovely town I knew is far gone. I continue to pray for the town and as and when I can, I go to visit some of my old friends who still live there.

The City of Tamale

So I ask again, where is home? Is it where we are born, where we have a house or where we have a job? In my experience, home is where you find yourself, where you are surrounded by loved ones and ultimately, where you are happy. I came to school in Tamale and I came to love the place. A few years ago, my dad had an appointment to teach at the Ghana Senior High School (a senior high school in Tamale) and so my family decided to move once again to this great city.

Today, I have found steemit and I have found a loving family here and so once again, I have found a new home. Thanks for reading and do not hesitate to follow my blog, upvote or resteem this post. Join me let’s build a home together.
