COOPERATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: MTN HOLDS BLOOD DONATION EXERCISE IN BOLGATANGA

Over the past few years, I have worked within a clinical laboratory setting and so I have seen first hand, the challenges we face in Ghana when it comes to blood, its transfusion, as well as its donation. Many people are still getting used to the idea of voluntarily walking into a hospital and donating blood. Unless it becomes obligatory (eg. donating blood for a relative), there are still a lot of people who do not see the need to give out blood.

So you can imagine how happy I was when I read on news that MTN Ghana, in collaboration with Save a Life Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, and the Upper East Regional Hospital, has organised blood donation exercise in the Bolgatanga and Navrongo municipalities to help save lives. The exercise, which was an extended part of this year's valentine's day celebration was aimed at motivating people to become voluntary donors. Bolgatanga and Navrongo are the two biggest towns in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The exercise go over 300 people showing up to donate, and for me, it is a great improvement.

Social responsibility is an ethical framework and suggests that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a duty every individual has to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystems. In Ghana many Organisations have assisted communities within which they operate by way of social amenities, scholarship packages for students, skill training etc. The MTN group and the other telecommunication networks have been particularly helpful.
