The current maize price at Market

Good morning Farmers! Agriculture produce in the tropics becomes scarce and expensive when we enter the drying season. One of the challenge we normally face is the rainfall factor. We mostly depend on the natural rainfall which which is not able to rain all year round. Most farmers too do not have the means of practicing the modernized irrigation system. So, farmers are compelled to wait for the natural rain which are mostly erratic. At certain points, farmers are to calculate at which time it mostly rain and when it ceases. This really becomes a hectic situation to adopt.

So, within the whole year, maize cropping are done in only two seasons - major and minor. With this, there is always variations in the yield farmers harvest. The major season aids in abundance yield due to bumper rain. Sometimes the yields are affected by continuous rainfall during post harvest stage. The maize on the ground are destroyed by moisture and other rodents and insects. The minor season even through have low yield but the maize aren't affected by so many post harvest losses. The minor season maize has price.

This week my survey was to find out the market prices of maize. There were few maize at market today. The maize are from farming at villages. You would see maizes having been bagged in sacks and loaded in trucks. Last month the price of maize was Gh ¢ 300 for one bag of maize. But this week, it has shot to Gh ¢ 370.

There is a likelihood of price of maize shooting up again since the new maize crops haven't been Cultivated. This increased of prices have affected some local foods like kenkey, dough, porridge and pito. Since they are used by maize.

We hope to see more production of maize crop to feed the population. But it still bores down to more improved method of farming like irrigation system and fertilizer Application. We would be interviewing more farmers and see how best we can support.
