How I make ceramic heart magnets

Super easy to make, I began making these ceramic magnets for wedding favours.

You can use normal clay for this (if you have access to a kiln) or air drying clay. I’ve also been pretty successful at making these with salt dough (and using a baking soda and cornstarch recipe- see future posts).
Instructions:

1. Role out your clay with a rolling pin.
   Top tip: use two strips of wood approximately 5mm thick either side of the rolling pin to get an even thickness.
2. Use a cookie cutter to cut out your shape- your magnets don’t have to be heart shape so experiment! If you don’t have cookie cutters you could use a glass.
3. Leave shapes to dry before going in a kiln to fire. If using air dry clay follow packet instructions for drying time. If using salt dough avoid putting these in the microwave, low oven instead.
4. You could apply a simple glaze, but I discovered that Koh-i-Noor watercolours sink into the porous clay beautifully and can then be varnished/ or apply a clear acrylic spray.
5. Finally attach a magnet to the back with superglue- I use round, thick (about 3mm) magnets so that they can hold the weight of the clay. If you want to use thinner magnets then experiment with making your clay shapes thinner.
