Morris's scribbles

I'm sharing with you the process of how I created 'Stairway', an illustration for Chapter Twenty Two of Doug Karr's amazing novel Dwelling. This is the second of three drawings I have created for this chapter.

In their apartment, sitting with a pencil in his hand, scribbling another incoherent miniature stairway on the peeling paint across from his toilet, he wondered how long he’d had the hard wooden seat beneath him.

The process of creating the drawing

I started with a piece of paper that I had already prepared by dipping the base of the paper into ink to create a distressed look.

Using a dip pen and drawing ink I began to draw Morris's 'incoherent miniature stairway' on the paper.

Morris was unaware he’d walked home. He was past the point of pins and needles, so it had to have been longer than an hour. No more sound on the stairwell. Sometimes he'd get a lucky look at a big titter in a tight skirt through the peephole this time of night, but it was past that now, and the concentric stairwells in his drawing were starting to give him a headache.

I added ink washes across the paper to suggest the different tones and marks. Darker lines were added with the dip pen and brushes.

So many souls in these splintered walls. He tried to mash the end of the pencil into a tiny knot in the wood, seeing if it would regain it's point, but only managing flaked graphite, descending to the floor in a rain of black dust.

I love that this started with the treads of the stair as a pattern almost abstract. Wonderful. I love the look of ink on paper from a scratch nib.

It was an interesting illustration to make as it needed to look like Morris's scribbled drawing, so yes i went for scratchy marks and a feeling of scraping the drawing into the surface.

me encanta como creaste de sus letras un dibujo con un sentimiento de oscuridad y algo de soledad, excelente

Thank you @jessalin - I try to pick up on the mood of the chapter in the style of the work.

I really like this one.

I'm a big fan of black&white art.

The simpler, the better, in my opinion.

I like how you started with 5 lines... And then there's a whole painting 2 pictures after, lol.

It reminded of Deadpool doing Bob Ross.

You can check it here if you haven't seen it:

That is hilarious, I hadn't seen that before.

I find the style of drawing really cool. I always enjoy in your drawing...Thank you for share 😆

Thanks @jahangirwifii - glad you like my posts
