The master key

Today, I'm showing you the process of how I created 'Cut', an illustration for Chapter Fifteen of Doug Karr's fantastic novel Dwelling.

Rube whipped his “master key”, a pair of colossus bolt cutters, from his backpack. Deuce glanced over his shoulder, half-assed lookout that he was.

The process of creating 'Cut'

March1837.jpg

Firstly, black drawing ink was dripped across the paper and a large section painted black and left to dry. Next, I used a paint brush and an old toothbrush to flick and spray ink onto sections of the paper. The image of the chain and cutters was then sketched out on the paper in pencil.

Then layers of ink and water were added with a brush to create areas of tone. The lines and details were added using a dip pen and drawing ink.

Rube shifted his stance to shield his activities, slicing through the chain securing the lowrider to a lamppost. Another day, another sucker.

Ink on paper

Hopping the leather banana seat, he peddled from the scene with Deuce trailing on his clown BMX. Up the ramp, Manhattan bound.

Have a great day and Steem on!

The technique reminded me of "spatter painting" when I was in early grade school. Much more refined, of course!

Same techniques I imagine (not too refined :D), I use a variety of old brushes to create different splatter marks and paint sprays.

really awesomecreative art its,,so great idea of art..its really awesome and gorgeous no doubt
really fentastic!!!

Really nice ink technique!

There's something so fantastically ominous about the way you chose to frame this. The "master key" just entering in the upper right. The shadowy darkness engulfing the bottom left. And the dirty blackened chain about to be snapped in two. Like the insides of Rube's cavernous mind. LOVE IT!

The black marks feel energetic- almost rushed, which is the look I wanted. The cutting of the chain is a quick (rushed) action - now you see it, now it's gone!
