Drawing for Dwelling -Coffee?
Freshly ground
The smell of freshly ground brewing coffee in the morning, what a great way to start the day! I must admit that coffee is part of my daily ritual. There is always a fresh cup of coffee sat on my drawing desk, ready to kick-start the process of creating the first drawing of the day. What would I do without coffee?
But what is that floating in my coffee?
Oh, hang on... I think that may be a chunk of @dougkarr's novel Dwelling. Yes, I think it is. From this angle is looks like a piece of Chapter 8, it's STEEMing hot, but I'll take a sip of coffee and see. Damn that's good!
This third coffee was finally allowing her to keep her eyes open for minutes at a time now. She knew a bar was the last place she should seek refuge, but she couldn't help it.

The process of creating a drawing for Chapter 8 of Dwelling
The image of a hand holding a coffee cup was sketched out lightly in pencil. I also added wax to the paper in areas that I wanted to keep free from ink, such as highlights on the hand and the reflection in the coffee.
Then areas were masked off with tape, before applying layers of inks, building up mid to dark tones.
The bartender looked across at her. The only customer left. He was ready to close.
"Another coffee?"
She looked down at her mug.

Finally, the masking tape was removed and the lines and details were applied with a dip pen and drawing ink.
... How long had she held her death grip on this mug of congealing brown upper?
"No, that's alright. Thanks."

I'm 34 and never learned to drink coffee.. observing with envy those who cling to their steaming hot mug all through the cold half of the year. I have learned to appreciate your cool drawing style though and I really I should get into the inking game also, it looks so cool :)
