There are two main climatic seasons in Nigeria, the rainy(wet) season and the dry season. Of the two above stated seasons, the rainy season will be the focus of our discussion this morning.

In this article I'll be writing about the rainy season particularly as it occurs in the southern part of the country and most especially the NIGER-DELTA region where I am domiciled.

The Nigerian rainy season is divided into two phases characterized by heavy and frequent downpours. The fisrt phase is longer and takes it's origin in the month of March. It usually starts as a short burst of stormy and heavy downpour lasting less than an hour in the evenings of the first half of the month of March. By the end of March, it's pattern becomes more irregular but more persistent.

It falls this way with rainfalls for more than four days of the week and rain measurements of more than 4,000mm recorded at its peak in the month of July when it rains sometimes every day of the week. The first phase of the Nigerian rainy season gives way to a short spell of dry season that last most of the weeks of August called the August Break.

In the first week of September commences the second and shorter phase of the Nigerian rainy season which last just two months, ending in the first week of November but in no way is it less intense than the first longer phase that peaks in July. A major characteristic of the second and shorter phase of the Nigerian rainy season is the stormy weather accompanied with frequent bright dazzling lightnings and loud sounding thunders.

The second phase of the rainy season ends in early November giving way to a long dry season that ends in February of the new year.

The rainy season in Nigeria last no less than seven months and some days particularly in the southern wet parts of the country. Of both seasons the rainy season is my favourite. It's dark overhead clouds provides a good relief from the hot tropical sunshine and the cool moisture laden winds brings with it cleaner fresh dust-free air and a cooler temperature.

Nigeria is in the tropics and it's by nature a hot climatic region. If you are a lover of cool weather and you have a desire to visit Nigeria, the most fun-time to do that would be in the rainy season.

I do hope you enjoyed reading my article on the Nigerian rainy season. Thanks for your time, bye for now and have a lovely day.
