MY CLOSE UP PICTURES OF GRAZING CATTLE AND THE FULANI HERDSMAN

Good morning friends, I am Stephen from Nigeria. I live in the town of Sapele in Delta State. Today on my way to the grocery store I came across a herd of grazing White Hump back Fulani cattle with the herdsman and I was opportune to take some close up pictures so you can see closely what the White Fulani cattle looks like.

The above picture shows the Fulani herdsman standing at a street corner watching two of his cows eating grass at the opposite side of the street besides a Carpenters shed.

In this photo you can clearly see the hump of the cow on it's back. It is mostly adipose tissue and it is said to be an adaptation of the cow to conserve energy as they transverse great distances in search of green pastures. The White Fulani cattle is a very energetic breed of cattle and they like their Herdsmen are nomadic and always on the move unlike most other cattle breeds that are more sedentary and bred in confined spaces.

In this picture above you will observe the big bulging abdomen of the cows. The are ruminants with four stomach chambers and in addition to that, this particular breed are heavy grazers, eating as much as 40% of their body weight in grass in a single day.

This picture above shows a calf from the herd. You can notice it's smaller horns measuring only about 8inches unlike fully grown adults with horns reaching 2 feet or more in length. Also take note of it's slender long legs which is an adaptation for trekking over vast distances. This calf weighs as much as 200kg while fully grown cows can weigh as much as 600kg.

The herdsmen in charge of most grazing cattle herds are often young adults or older teenagers from the nomadic Fulani tribe. Here in this picture, the herdsman is a teenager of 14 years old.

The cattle breed is named White Fulani because the majority in the breed come with white furcoats but it is not unusual to find dark brown furcoats or white furcoats with patches of black and brown. This is mostly due to mating White Fulani cattle with Red Fulani cattle. In this picture is shown a Red Fulani cattle and a mixed breed amongst the herd of White Fulani cattle.

This close up picture shows the head region of the cattle breed. Take note of the long slender faces with characteristically shapped long horns. The horns are harvested and used for trumpets and other kind of wind instruments.

The White Fulani Cattle is Nigeria's most popular beef source and it is a culturally and economically important breed.
