Let him ask of God
We approach this verse conscious that James’ immediate context was the believer’s response “when ye fall into divers temptations” (see James 1: 2).
“Divers temptations” meant various sorts of adversity, affliction and trouble.
He had assured the persecuted saint who is contending for the truth of the gospel that “the trying of your faith worketh patience” (see James 1: 3).
The saints were under intense persecution.
It is this saint who is under intense and manifold persecution that James encourages to pray to God who is a giving-God devoid of fault-finding.
The saint is to know that God did not give the persecution or trial. These trials are not divinely orchestrated.
The saints are not praying/asking for the death of their tormentors or persecutors. The thought that those persecuting them should be killed did not make it into their prayer lives.
That is not a prayer point.
Their focus was God who is a giving-God
