Excursion! Why not academic trip.
Excursion is seen as just a field trip and is mostly likened to sight seeing. Basically, the standard is set by the education sector and probably the education regulation body. Very well, the thought of excursion in this part of the world creates an impression that it is a secondary school trip! Maybe an academic trip would have been a better name. You cannot really blame them!
Moreover, is it the name we call it and the impression it creates that matter? Or is it how it is carried out?
Yes! The impression it creates matters viewing from the level of preparation one would put in being a student or a staff! The impression it creates is proportional to the level of preparation.
Should it be seen as an academic trip instead? Off course! Especially when it concerns students in a university and workers in firms! What we call it is as important as how we do it. So! are we doing it right in this part of the world??
In a university setting, an academic trip is supposed to be one where the lecturer that takes a course goes to an industry related to the course area and show his students what he has thought them in the classroom. He answers their questions and allow the technologists in the industry show it work! Don't you think so?
The idea that the lecturer who most times are professors go behind the technologists in the course of a trip is clearly something out of place. That shows 'something gone wrong'. Should one have more working experience before he is declared a professor and not just more of paper work? Experiences translates to paper work but we have seen duplication here and there!
Call it excursion, call it academic trip! The way we carry them out is what have created the impressions we have about it today. Let us do it the right way! I think academic trip is!

While I was in secondary school we went for an excursion to NIFOR in Benin Here
Trust me it was more like being with your mates away from the class stress and seeing the palm trees and the machines that process the palm kernerls to oil
However, as undergraduates I think there should be something a little extra

Excursion should be an oportunity for students to learn in practical,what they are being thought on paper vis a vis Academic Trip is the name most suitable for it
