We all know that feeling when we see walls of text; we get scared and that "where am i gonna start from feeling kicks in", that can be referred to as Reading distress. This is not restricted to students and scholars alone, but to the general mass.

As trickish as this form of distress is, it is a disorder that can be crippling, scary and generally misconceptualised phenomenon. Just like the fear of enclosure, and the fear of large body of water, reading distress or anxiety is a disorder. It can be related to an ppposite reaction in emotion towards reading.

Practically, this is a form of disorder that can not be diagnosed. But from closer studying, it shows visible signs of red flags in anybody if a close attention is taken to a certain person under observation. This is some kind of battle people around the world are facing.

Disecting Steemit

Taking a closer look at Steemit: seeing long posts with massive blocks of writings without images is enough to set some audience off. Aside from BOTs which upvotes some desicated bloggers without reading, only a few take their time to read all post in full.

Researchers finds out that reading is not part of our real life activities. Here is a chat showing what people do with their time on a free day and on weekends:

Spotting it

How to identify readind anxiety in children is not so simple but simple at the same time. But in adults, we are talking of a more complicated case. A seasoned teacher cannot categorically indentify this disorder, but often time it comes as some form of rebellion in children.

For example; A child could protest " i know how to read, and you can not make me read it". For some it comes in the form of ; "i do not think i understand this, i mighy not be able to do this". In adults, you never can tell; because an adult can fake reading but his mind is a thousand miles away.

Probable Causes

For adults, multiple things can trigger this. Ranging from family problems, unemployement, poverty, depression, too much expectations, heart breaks, poor mental healths, worries and dozens of things can cause reading distress.

But in children, this is a phobia that could be easily overcomed from childhood, by asking them questions (Not intimidating ones), giving them a good feedback too can help boost their morals about reading.

Friendly Advise

A psycologist might sound like the most appropirate solution for both children and adults. But in reality, only the individuals affected can make such anxiety go away.
