Concord square and Luxor obelisk in Paris. The generous gift to the French from Egypt!

Hi everyone!

I'm very glad to be here again and want to share one ancient and interesting story about the oldest monument of Paris.

Many years ago, the Egyptian sultan presented this obelisk to the French King - Louis-Philippe.

There are two such monuments and they are completely identical: one is in the center of Paris, and the other is still at the entrance to Luxor in Egypt.

Obelisk has nothing to do with the history of France, but in comparison with what was previously standing on this place, it looks more sympathetic...

Once upon a time there was a guillotine. It was here that the head of Mary Antoinette and many well-known people was cut off.

Obelisk is approximately 3600 years old and was made of pink granite.

The height of the obelisk is 23 meters and its weight is 230 tons. On all four sides it's covered with hieroglyphs glorifying the pharaohs of Ramses II and Ramses III.

On both sides, the obelisk is decorated by two 9-meter fountains.

The facades of the fountains are decorated by mythical statues and gilded inserts. They look very beautiful especially at night time.

The Concord square is the first thing I saw in Paris. The weather was bleak and it was raining, but this place never lost its charm and magic.

The Obelisk occupies a small area, so it will take over 15 minutes to inspect and photograph all. Nearby is the famous island - Île de la Cité - the oldest part of the city.

To the right of the obelisk begins the Elysee Fields - the long-distance street and at the same time one of the most popular places in Paris.

At the end of the street is the world-famous Triumphal Arch.

As you can see, there are many interesting things in the center of Paris, but some places require a lot of time due to large queues. This is especially true of the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower so if you want to visit everything, you must spend few days of even weeks in Paris.

We were only 3 days in Paris and we managed to see a lot of interesting things, but still it wasn't enough at all. I was very upset because we didn't have time to go to Versailles and Disneyland. It was one of my childhood dreams, but I believe that it will surely happen once!

Wait for new stories about the Eiffel Tower and the Triumphal Arch soon!

Best wishes,

Olga:)
