Nigeria Pulled Through.
--
The match between Nigeria and South Africa is always a match that comes with bragging rights. There is always s fight for supremacy when two powerheads come together. The same with Nigeria and Ghana and also Nigeria with Cameroon or any other top African country.
There is no surprise to see Nigerians celebrating wild when Cameroon were put to the sword. And prior to yesterday's match, Nigeria already lost to South Africa at home and then a draw away to them. Everyone expected a cagey affair.
Nigeria started brightly and should have been further ahead but the sensational Chukuweze put Nigeria ahead and he became the youngest scorer in AFCON. He deserved it especially with the way he dazzled when he was brought on against Cameroon.
Nigeria gained the upper hand but South Africa were up for the fight. They tried all they could to get back into the game but their moment came when Odion Ighalo had a touch of the ball to keep the South African player onside. From the look of it, it was clearly offside but seeing that the Nigerian player had the last touch, it can't count for an offside anymore.
South Africa dominated after that and looked like they would be the one to stay ahead but Rohr; Nigerian coach had other plans. He took Ahmeh Musa off to inject fresh pace to the side and more precision too seeing that Musa cuts in so well but his passes were not precise.
Just when the game was destined for extra time, an in-swinging cross came in and all Ekong had to do was tap it into an unguarded post when the goalkeeper mistimed his punch.
That was the victory that Nigeria needed and enough to see them through to the Semi-finals.
Congratulations to Nigeria. I hope they can go all the way to lift the trophy but then, we have another hurdle to cross with another important match against whoever will go through in the other match.
Confirmed! Algeria is our next opponent.
