How The Nigerian Police Force intimidate and extort money from motorists.
Corruption in Nigeria is affecting every sector, but the Nigerian police Force seems to be the most corrupt of all; certainly ranking second after our dirty politicians.
In as much as police is a noble profession, and commands the respect of so many, in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. The Nigerian police Force (PFC) could be well described as uniformed armed robbers.
The Nigerian police are notorious for extorting money from the populist. Their most common and very annoying corruption practice is that of extorting money from commercial drivers on daily basis. More than 80% of Nigerians are aware of this evil and hate them for these atrocities.
They mount road blocks and on check point and extort money from drivers. Any driver that refuses to give them that money, incurs their wrath as they would do everything to make sure he regrets not giving them the money. There have been cases where they shot dead a driver for not giving them the money. Some commercial drivers have lost their lives for this single reason. Sometime, they'll purposely start searching the vehicle and everyone on it unnecessarily and sluggishly just to delay the driver and his passengers. They do it intentionally to make the driver or a passenger who is in a haste give them the money to avoid being delayed.
Today I was in a commercial bus going to a photo studio when we met them on our way. They demanded there usual N50 from the driver, he had to beg them by telling them that we were his first passengers, so he hasn't made any money for the day. He pleaded with them for several minutes before they allowed us pass.
So many drivers have demonstrated and revolted against this treatments from the police force, but nothing has changed as regards to that. Of course who will call them to order? Is it our very corrupt leaders whom they are helping to intimidate the masses?
With bitcoin and crypto this kind of behaviour will be difficult.
True. But most Nigerians are yet to accept cryptocurrencies. Thanks for commenting here @romangt87
No matter where you go in the world, if someone has "power" or "authority" over you, namely police in this example, they will use it for corrupt purposes. It truly does not matter where in the world or economic situation. Crypto will make it harder for them, for sure.
Furthermore, I hope we all just recognize that police gangs and any person claiming to have authority over you, is illegitimate!
No one can take claim to power or authority over you as a free human being.
Taxation is theft and extortion is clearly theft.
It does not matter the uniform or any other designation.
Taxation is even worse here where no social aminities are provided. Thanks for that comment @itsmein3d.
nice...u deserve resteem and upvote...
With such wide spread corruption, the country will go downhill
I pray it doesn't go down. I hope for change. Thank you for your comment here @positivesteem.
The Nigerian Police Force is the most corrupt police force in the world. The men of the force are not really educated so you should expect a corrupt force.
@lucashunter, as a Nigerian, I know you'll agree with this post. Thanks for confirming my story.
You are welcome @ogoowinner. And this is a really nice piece.
It must be really hard to always have to deal with law enforcement like that. Once I was in Lagos driving with a someone from Lagos and we got stopped as well. First they wanted money, then they changed their mind and wanted the phone number of my Nigerian friend. In the end we managed to drive off without giving money nor phone number, but this took at least 15 minutes.
@edje, I hope things change for good so visitors don't get embarrassment in my country anymore.
I truly hope so as well!
true talk @ ogoowinner. May God help our country
@oluwatobiloba, Amen o. Thanks for this.
you are welcome
When Police is the Menace in the Society....what an Irony
I hope it changes for good. Thank you for commenting here @trillex.
Just saddens me.
Definitely need order. And less corruption to witness changes.
It's saddening indeed. Thanks for leaving a comment here @sidwrites.
