Understanding Poetry #7: Devourers

The giant rats in the gutters
Eat more than a treasure bag in turns
We shall not remain tomorrow
Till the black rats eat to their hearts'content.

Wow! The giant rats have gaint fingers
Despite their mechanical figures
And magnetic eyeballs
They live to work against their nation.

The sickly monkey at our mother's farmyard
Now wears expensive clothes
He proudly commands the harmattan wind
To blow down our father's plantain.

A thousand pity to all
Who live on empty hopes
For their caves will surely be thrashed.

Commentary

This poem criticizes those who misuse the opportunity that calls on them. They are called, "the giant rats" and "black rats". They eat and grow fat and do not even think of tomorrow. The black rats, the giant rats work against their nation because they do not contribute to any development back home hence, "They must work against their nation."

This is good poetry. Your imagery is alive and easily relatable. But you can do better...try out some rhymes, employ more figures of speech...like this poem is purely symbolic. Let it carry the full weight of symbolism.
