Two weird mushrooms on one tree

in #photography9 years ago (edited)

We found two big mushrooms on the same tree the other day. The top one looked like something that could inspire one of @alienbutt's spaceships:

The bottom one was even bigger, over 30cm (12") across:

These are called beefsteak fungus or ox tongue (Fistulina hepatica), biefstukzwam in Dutch. I don't know if they are edible, but snails seem to like them:

Here's an older photo of one, where you can see (on the top left-hand side) that they ooze a dark red fluid when damaged, making them look even more like meat:

Thanks for watching!

Nice post and really cool pictures!
I've never found F. hepatica but now I know how to id it.
So glad to find other mushroom enthusiast on Steemit.

Slug alert! :D What a cool one and he must love that shroom :)

They look so strange, I've never seen any kinds of mushroom like that

Interesting. It has such a wide distribution. We get the same species here in Tasmania.

What amazing looking fungi, they look quite beautiful in a strange way. And the photos are so sharp, precision clear and focused with incredible colour depth. Love it.

Just as happy we don't have them in the Washington rainforests (Northwest) but I love the patina on the tree. The contrast between the two colors is really striking.
