Tree Tuesday: Abandoned Hornets' Nest
This is a photo of what the hornets left behind. They don't re-use nests, but maybe some bird can make this its home come spring:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 220mm, ISO800, f5.6, 1/125s
Last summer, this nest was in full use, with much coming and going (and eying me suspiciously) of hornets:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 265mm, ISO400, f8, 1/100s
And no, the tree hasn't changed colour; I just decided to keep the sunset glow on the first photo instead of adjusting the white balance.
Thanks for watching, and feel free to substitute the word "hornets" with whatever takes your fancy!
The key word * abandoned *
Should I have tagged this posting with "steemit"?
you will get in trouble using "st#@mit".
An amazing photo @ocrdu.
Beautiful old tree,
Look at my tree:)
What neat photos! I still hate those little buggers though. They HURT!
Well, the species we have here in The Netherlands isn't aggressive at all, and will even warn you first when you get too close to the nest. Ignore that warning for too long then yes, it will HURT!
Ours here will chase you off if you get too close. They chase me off my own porch and they don't even have a nest there!
They usually only defend their nest and feeding places; is there a slightly damaged tree nearby? They like to feed on tree sap. Or they could just be a more aggressive species. We have the Vespa crabro here.
Our house is built out of pine timbers so the whole thing provides a feeding frenzy for all the hornets and wasps in our area. On the last warm fall day, there were swarms of them trying to get into our attic!
Well done!
