Old school photography: Kodak Panatomic-X and Ilford Pan-F

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

(Edited) repost of a 10-month old article. All included photos are my own.

I was organising my old negative film collection and came across a few strips of exposures on Kodak Panatomic-X and Ilford Pan-F. Very low ISO numbers, but I loved the stuff, for the tonality and fine grain. Negative scanners don't do it justice, so I made a few prints the old way and scanned those, to give at least some impression:

Depending on how you developed the film and printed from the negatives, you could get exactly what you wanted, from the hard

to the softer

to that silky, 1920s-postcard effect I find hard to recreate in a digital workflow:

Kodak Panatomic-X was discontinued, but you can still buy Ilford Pan-F. Not as easy to use as the more modern T-grain stuff, but I like it better.

Thanks for watching!

incredible! I sometimes wish I was born to the film era. Now I'm spoiled beyond hope

I must admit I have become a bit lazy as well and mostly shoot digital these days 8-).

Yeah, it's so convenient. Still, I like watching some youtubers do medium format landscape photography, and I think some results cannot be replicated even with best camera features and post processing.
I'm an amateur myself, but trying my best to improve. I can use some pro tips on my photography, so feel free to check my blog if you like.

Totally different feel to digital photography. I did a little bit of black and white film processing way back when I was in high school. I've always wanted to do more but have never got around to it. Maybe one day.

It's time-consuming, difficult to process, and you only get to make a limited number of shots unless you carry a back pack with film rolls, but still ... it is great fun!

These days, you can also just send in your rolls of film and get the negatives and a DVD with scans of the negatives sent back tou you. Not quite the same as doing everything yourself, though.
