The Best Grand Strategy Game
What makes a strategy game great? The answer is choice and a bad strategy game can make the illusion of choice. For example: Perhaps you have the 'choice' of 4 units to use but one is really the only true choice because it is the best, and this for a strategy game gives it the 'As large as the ocean, as shallow as a pool' taste. This can be seen clearly by a game like, Warhammer III....looks amazing but is very limited with unit choice and design.
Choice isn't the only key factor to a grand strategy game (we'll call it GSG for short). The next factor in determining the success of a GSG is reason. Why am i fighting? Well a good example of why to fight would be Warcraft III. This game has a campaign that makes you hate your enemies and love your allies. Enemies being the demons you fight, allies being the races of your planet azeroth. Not only this but the game has 2 prior releases setting up conflict within those races aswell, so its not a clear black and white. ((Warcraft 3 isn't the best but I do never the less recommend it, amazing game, hours of enjoyment)
The last and most important key factor to a successful GSG is multiplayer. Without multiplayer the player would get bored much too quickly. No developer has yet to make AI that can think as well as a human (Thank God, sounds scary!). Games like Civilization 5 have horribly glitchy internet hosting connections (I have 1000 hours of gameplay still, so i very much recommend it) which the devs have yet to address. A GSG with an amazing hosting system I would say goes to Total War: Rome 2...I've played it enough to come across multiplayer and it is a 0 problems system. Fast join, Fast connect, Fast play, E.Z.
Now, what is the BEST GSG? Hearts of Iron 4, or HOI4 Hearts of Iron IV lets you take command of any nation in World War II; the most engaging conflict in world history. IGN, a credible company, reviewed it, saying:
“Hearts of Iron 4 wields complexity like a swift armor division during the blitzkrieg, allowing it to serve the idea of layered, cerebral, strategic warfare instead of letting it needlessly bog down the experience.”
9/10 – IGN
Let's go through the list of what makes a great GSG and compare to HOI4
CHOICE: This game is incredibly versatile in its choice of units, it's almost funny to question if it is. You get to choose from a almost literally unlimited list of units (once you research them) which then you build a division from the unit you choose, as well as getting to combine units together ((VERY COMPLEX, but very fun once the player understands))
REASON: Its WW2, Nazis, Communists, pearl harbor happens, and if you feel like being evil you can be those bad countries (Nazi germany, Soviet union, japan) Not only this but in multiplayer when you are pitted against your friends, you start to get paranoid whether they will end up back stabbing you...many reasons to play.
ONLINE: Online for this game is ok...if you can find people with a great internet connection then all should go well, there are five speeds to the game and people with great internet can get up to 4 speed.
So I recommend HOI4, its on sale this weekend so go buy it! perhaps we will meet each other...

No age of empires? :)
Age of empires is amazing, and i definitely put that up there with WCIII and SC2, but I wanted a more modern look at it...not many people will like a game with old graphics. I do agree with you Age of empires competes with these top strategy games. =)
