Hello World and the Virtue of Moderation

in #introduceyourself8 years ago

Hello world! This is my very first post on steemit.

I am excited about steemit and the ideas behind it. I have myself been thinking that the world very badly needs a new type of social media which is decentralized. Creating good content should be rewarded - good journalism is not free, and I am sick and tired of sponsor-driven media. I believe this is going to change the world for the better.

But we are only in the beginning of this development, clearly. We also, very badly, need a system that is resistant to manipulation by economically powerful entities (like certain states) who work tirelessly to spread propaganda, a system resistant to advertisers, and a system which is designed to mitigate the filter bubble phenomenon (to have everyone customize their news flows to fit their preconceptions isn't a very good idea). I think there are still more work to be done, but steemit is a step in the right direction, definitely.

I have seen some introductory posts here where people present themselves under some really specific labels (like "I am a anarcho-capitalist-neo-progressive transgender solipsist"). I am not too fond of such labels. I am a political seeker. If I had to use a label to describe my views, I would use the term "moderate". And I think moderation is somewhat underappreciated. The world is complex. Very often ideologies and simplifying theories seem to blind people from recognizing that proponents of other views also have some good points, and that there are problems with their own theory that they should try to address. In debates I often find myself thinking that both sides have good arguments, that there are both pros and cons with various propositions, that the truth often is somewhere in between.

I am here because I'm curious and I hope to find some good articles and discussions here.
