In the beginning, Olodumare created the earth and the heavens. He decided to rule over the heavens while he gave olokun the ability to rule over the earth. Olodumare asked Obatala to go create dry land for other living creature. He was was aked to go with a gold chain long enough to reach the earth. He was given a snail's shell filled with sand so he could pour the sand on the water, he was given a white hen, a black cat, and a palm nut, and a bag where he could keep it.

The gold was contributed by all the supernaturals and the bag was done by Orunmila himself. Obatala strted the journey down to earth. He hung the chain from a right side of the sky and placed the bag over his shoulder. When he reached the end of the chain, he recieved orders from Orunmila instructing him to pour the sand from the snail's shell, and also immediately release the white hen. When the hen got to the earth, it started spreading the sand around and anywhere the sand touched, it became life.
