I am actually close to a month old in Steemit and from the above, I have been able to power up 20.757 steem.

HOW I GOT THE STEEM THAT I POWERED UP

I derived the steem from up-votes on my posts and from curation rewards.

REASONS FOR POWERING UP

As a newbie, I have been a beneficiary of steem delegation, I was delegated about 500 steem by @ngoenyi .

So one of the reasons why I am powering up is to also help build up newbies by delegating steem power to them.

A further reason for powering up is to contribute my quota to the Steemit ecosystem.

Finally, powering up also attracts higher curation rewards and helps me build my steem power.
