Cooking meeting at a friend's house...

in #education4 years ago

Peace Steemians,

Last night, me and my friend Drew went to a Cooking meeting at a friend's house...

He's from New Zealand, and a few other foreigners from the US and New Zealand were there as well.

Over dinner, someone complained that they still couldn't understand much Japanese at work meetings, even though they'd been living here for over 10 years.

Few high impact points"

"I don't know how I'll ever learn ALL of this," he said, feeling really overwhelmed by the Japanese language.

Others also expressed the same frustration.

I said the conversation sounded a lot like the mails I get from my students, so we talked about a few strategies for making learning easier.

Language learning seems hard when you see it as this big mountain you have to climb...

But the truth is you don't need to know ALL of it to speak fluently.

In fact, from my experience learning Japanese and teaching English, I'd guess every language has a few "high impact points" that can give you great improvement with not much effort.

One of these in Japanese is understanding how natives shorten and blend words...

"Smart phone" becomes "sumaho" in Japanese, for example.

Once you understand this pattern, natives become a LOT easier to understand, and your pronunciation gets so much smoother, too.

In English, there's a similar pattern that makes speaking much more comfortable, and that helps you sound more natural almost instantly...
