A Cab Man's conversation.
Sometimes, if you are open to experience, you get kicks from people and things around. You learn from the shortest words spoken and laugh your head off or get deep in thoughts from the plainest of sentences when you analyse it your way.
I took a cab from Olopo-Mewa to Sango (Ibadan) yesterday, and was busy with my phone when a co-passenger decided it would be funny to mimic me pressing my phone by pretending to chat on his 'kpalasa'(Nigerian slang of sub-standard) phone.
This got the driver and Mr funny bones (I gave him the name) talking and although i refused to unglue my eyes from phone in a bid to seem uninterested, I was deep in their conversation and then deep in my own thoughts.
The driver went on about the world being so modernized now and how he was rejected from entering school when he was young for 2 years because his right hand wasn't touching his left ear.
'oh my! I had totally forgotten it used to be a thing in Nigeria'
I totally forgot how entering school wasn't just a matter of walking up to the school and paying tuition fee or writing a test to access actual academic competence. Rather, it was a matter of how long your arm was.
The rubbish!
Frankly,I get mixed feelings when I see students these days rubbish the essence of being educate, degrading their certificates to mare papers, instead of a show of what it really is.
Maybe this projects a degree of truth about life.
once attaining a feat becomes much less difficult, it is valued much less.
As i paid for the ride and headed toward the next cab I had to board, I wondered where on academic ladder I would be now if getting formal education was a matter of my hand's ability to cover my ear.
I was once a victim of that culture... I later beat them to the game! :)
