San Pedro Fish Market, LA Harbor

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

Yesterday we took a walk down to the harbor to get some fresh fish from the San Pedro Fish Market.

We haven't been down there for a while because the super rich people who own the couple of miles of land across that part of the ocean decided that they were going to rip out and destroy every single small business and replace them with fancier ones. They basically told all the local small business owners sorry about your luck.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos from before the destruction. They really tore through it.

I was surprised to see that the fish market was still there! These guys get fresh seafood directly from the fisherman. You know that it is as fresh as it's going to get.

Amanda hates pretty much anything that isn't a filet of fish. She describes it as:

I can't eat anything that is squidgy or has eyes!

My British friends will recognize the term squidgy. We don't really use that word here in the US.

The oysters looked fantastic, but I can't bring myself to eat them raw. I prefer the canned smoked ones. Does that make me ghetto? Probably. Oh well, I grew up in Ohio and Kentucky so what do you want.

You can buy the seafood raw, or you can have them cook it up for you right there. I always want them to cook it because when I look at all the people eating it looks super good. But they cook everything with tons of oil and butter so Amanda isn't having it. Thanks to her, I am not 500 pounds.

Just outside, you can see where they have torn everything down:

They've started to level out the land and clean up somewhat in preparation for whatever the hell it is that they are going to build. Some kind of super-mall I imagine.

I love that very professional 'High Voltage' warning. Very ominous and post-apocalyptic.

So apparently, Elon Musk is building a Space X plant around here. The town is freaking out in response by destroying people's livelihoods, jacking up rents and tearing down buildings. I hope it is all worth it in the end.

The problem is that it is taking them years to do all of this. Meanwhile, there isn't much to do down here. They demolished a beloved restaurant called Ports 'o Call down here. A lot of people were up in arms, but ultimately they didn't own the land so it had to go. They also demolished Acapulcos, which was a Mexican restaurant that we went to almost every weekend. Now it's like a pile of dirt!

Well I didn't really mean for that post to take a depressing turn, but I suppose that it did. Hah! Oh well, what can you do. It is what it is. All we can do now is hope that it will all be replaced with something amazing! The cruise ships stop a short walk down the promenade, so I think that the hope is also that it will bring entertainment to the visitors. We shall see!

By the way - thanks to all those who have voted for my whaleshares witness @nuthman so far. You have boosted me to the 50th position in only a few short days! I really appreciate all of your support. Now I need to make a logo for it. I think it will have a Wildebeest in there somewhere.

Sort:

Most likely they will build something like an entertainment center, so that cruise liners can relax and leave a lot of money on the shore.

I think you're probably right. I just hope they get something going soon because it looks terrible down there!

Nothing stays the same. Hope you get some new decent restaurants to replace the ones you lost... Didn't know you are a witness, will certainly vote you :-)

Oh yeah - I cross posted this from whaleshares. I am not a steem witness, but a whaleshares witness. There's no way I'd get into the top 50 on Steem. Way too many people I think haha

Oh my mistake. Good luck whatever you do... :-)

Try Oysters raw Sir direct from the shell, it really is delicious but anyways we all have our own preferences.

Well I do hope that they would put some very nice things in that area where did tore down those establishments Sir @nuthman but if Space-X would be built there it would be fantastic :D

I think I will have to give it a try and just eat one. It grosses me out a bit, but I should just give it a go! haha
