Manifestations: A Weird Monster Exhibit
Our Bizarre Artwork
Most of you probably know by now that my wife is a professional painter. I, however have no painting skills whatsoever. I am pretty good at drawing weird crappy sketches though, so we had this idea to do a little project together.
We bought a huge stack of tiny canvases and came up with this little project where I draw something and she paints it, meanwhile she draws something and I paint it. The results are pretty disastrous, but we had a lot of fun doing it!
A few of the paintings you may have seen already but we are starting to build up quite the collection so I thought that I'd share them with the Steem community. We are planning to have an exhibit in Amanda's studio featuring these pieces along with some actual good work by Amanda and some other local artists.
Complete Madness and Stream of Consciousness
This all started a few months ago when I asked Amanda if she would teach me how to paint. She basically told me a couple of basic things and now refuses to teach me any more. She just says, practice-practice-practice. My hope is that by this time next year, I'll be able to have some modicum of control over what the hell the brush is doing. For now, just enjoy the unfettered madness and randomness!
Just to make it a little bit interesting, I'll also share a couple of shots of some sculpture that another amazing artist, James Muscarello has made for the show:
We've actually got enough artwork to fill the entire studio for the event, but we don't have them all together in one place yet so I wasn't able to take any photos. I plan to do a more comprehensive post once the gallery is completely set up.
The above is another piece by James. I love this guy! It's nice to see that he is still hanging in there even though he has a sizable pipe protruding from his skull. I sure hope he gets that looked at!
This one ended up coming out looking like youtube sensation JP Sears. This was never the intention but it just ended up that way for some reason. Maybe I had just watched one of his videos? For some reason Amanda decided that everyone was going to have red hair.
This little critter is actually not quite finished. I remember it was one of the first ones that I did and I got pissed off because I couldn't figure out how to do any details, and all I got from Amanda was 'just keep working on it'.
Obligatory Three Boobed Monster
I still have no idea what it is that she is holding in her hand, but there you have it. A 3 boobed monster woman:
I guess if you have three boobs, you have to only have one eye; because you know - you can't have it all. I think that she was originally holding a microphone, but my lack of painting skills turned it into some kind of a pickle or something. Who knows?
I have no idea what is going on with this guy. He looks like he's tripping balls if you ask me. Whatever it is, he seems like he is pretty blissed out so I'll just let him be. I guess now I'm giving them personalities. Oh well, why not?
This next one is one of my favorites.
A weirdly hairy dragon who wears what looks to be like some sort of potato sack pants. I don't even really know why he wears pants but I'm not a dragon, so what do I know. Something looks very unsanitary about this guy. Perhaps he's a homeless dragon?
This dude spends his days with electrodes attached to his head while standing in the middle of a Tesla coil. I am not one to question someone else's entertainment choices, but this does seem like an odd way to live. He seems to enjoy it quite a lot, however.
That's it for now! Check back over the next week to see more of this and other art that will be on display at the Loft Galleries here in Los Angeles. I will be taking better photos with everything in context. See you soon!
I like the eyes in all the pictures...
You got the sort of talent there that I really enjoy. It is almost like street art which is something that really appeals to me. LOL about the angry-looking JP Sears, some vegan probably said something annoying to him in that portrait.
James' possessed Homer Simpson sculpture is pretty rockin too.
If this is a sampling of what the entire exhibit's theme is going to be i hope you take more pics and share that with us. I envy some of the stuff you get to go to dude.
haha thanks, man. I've always liked to draw really weird stuff ever since I was a kid. lol! I didn't even think of it before, but yeah that totally looks like a crazed Homer.
Yes, I'll for sure take some better pictures at the show. We've gotten most of the stuff up now but were are trying to figure out how to position some black lights. It should be pretty cool.
Holy disenchantment!
Or unholy! ;p
