Tanah yang dicampur dengan belerang di sekitar kawah berwarna putih, maka warna air di kawah ini berwarna kehijauan-putih, yang unik dari kawah ini adalah airnya terkadang berubah warna. Because of that belief, no one dared to approach this area until finally in 1837 there was an expert named Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn who decided to go to the top of Mount Patuha for the sake of science.

Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn made it to the top of Mount Patuha and from there a white lake with a sulfurous odor that intercepted. Since then, the existence of the White Crater became famous and in 1987 the government began to develop a white crater as a tourist destination.

Letusan besar Gunung Patuha pada abad ke-10 membuat banyak orang berpikir bahwa lokasi ini adalah daerah berhantu karena setiap burung yang terbang melewati daerah tersebut akan mati. Karena kepercayaan itu, tidak ada yang berani mendekati daerah ini sampai akhirnya pada tahun 1837 ada seorang ahli bernama Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn yang memutuskan untuk pergi ke puncak Gunung Patuha demi ilmu pengetahuan.

Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn berhasil sampai di puncak Gunung Patuha dan dari situ ia melihat sebuah danau putih dengan bau belerang yang dicegat. Sejak saat itu, keberadaan Kawah Putih menjadi terkenal dan pada tahun 1987 pemerintah mulai mengembangkan kawah putih sebagai tujuan wisata.
