In our own Elemental Evil campaign, we attempted to do something similar to this... some of us distracted the medusa by taunting and trolling him in conversation, pretending we were from the rival fire cult. As we did that, our rogue tried to get behind him for a sneak attack. Didn't quite work as smoothly as we hoped, as he got fed up and attacked before our rogue was in position if I remember right. But where deception and trolling failed to get results, we made up for it in gratuitous area effect spells and many hurled flasks of flaming booze... 😈
