Contest : “Why should there be a president?”

Hi everyone.

I am very excited to take part in the contest organized by @ridwant topic: “why should there be a president”. I encourage everyone to take part in it so that your views can be heard.

What does the election of the Head of State (Election) mean to you?
In Ghana, presidential elections are held every four years. And every citizen of the country has the right to vote.
I see this as a platform for the people to choose who they want as a leader. Even tho I would say that it’s difficult to have a fair and honest election. It’s that time of the year where the country as a whole come together to put someone on the seat. Someone who they think is competent and can serve them very well. Someone who they think will listen to their cries when they call on.

Why should the president exist?
I have asked myself several time this question and even gone ahead to ask myself and even imagine how this country would be like if we didn’t have a president. Why do I say so? Our leaders are so corrupt that they do not have the interest of the people to heart. All they think about is their stomach and their pocket forgetting who put them up there.

A president is elected by the people;

1. To serve them
2. To bring about change and development in the country so that it can be recognized worldwide.
   A country without a presidents would not be recognized. And every democratic state needs to have a ruler.

What are the criteria for a head of State/President that you like?
In a country, everybody wants the best of everything. Before we choose a leader, we ask ourself if he is the best candidate to lead? Will the future be promising if he comes into power?

The criteria for a head of state that I like are as follows:

1. A leader must be brave.
   Being a leader entails a lot. And if you do not have the courage to do so it can make you look like a coward. Brave leaders are not afraid to take risk that they know that will benefit the country at the end. So if I am to select a leader, I will choose someone who is brave.
2. Honest
   In this era we are living in, one core value of humans is honesty. Even in relationships when one partner is not the honest the relationship does not last long how much more in leadership. In choosing a leader, we need someone who is true to his words and not just any person. If not then we will all one day get up and become leaders.
3. A leader must be smart.
   We do not just get up and choose people because we like the person or because the person speaks the same language as we do. We need smart people. Not just smart but smart and intelligent people who will be able to help the country in terms of crises or when there is an issue. Definitely the person should also have some form of education.

Others might also have different criteria in selecting a leader. But let us all try to choose someone competent for the job. Let us stop this favoritism. So that at the end we all benefit and make our country grow.
