I hope you all are well. Today I am going to talk to you about Esala Pun Poho Day. I mentioned on two previous occasions that there are 3 main poyas that are important to the Buddhist people. One of them is Esala Poya. So today is the great Esala poya day.

There are several main reasons why the Esala poya is important to the Buddhist people.

A special thing that happens in this month of Esala is the holding of the processions. Various temples throughout Sri Lanka conduct processions. These processions start from the Kataragama procession. Taking into account the history of Esala processions, the beginning of this took place on the day of the great month of Esala. It coincided with the beginning of the ceremonial procession held on the occasion of the display of the tooth brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamalaa and Prince Danta. Since then, every year, processions are held on the occasion of the month of Esala.

Several special events in the life of prince Sidhuhath happened on Esala Pun Poho day. Among those important events, the conception of Lord Bosatha in the womb of Goddess Maha Maya took place on Esala Poya Day.

Events such as the birth of prince Rahula, the departure of prince Sidhuhath from the laity after seeing four omens have also happened on a day like today. Also, after attaining enlightenment, his first sermon, the Dhamma Chakka Pavatthana Sutta, was preached for five monks on Esala poya day.

Also, on other pohaya days as well as on this esala pohaya day, the Buddhist people perform religious ceremonies and seal celebrations.
