[EP226] - Moving from daily running to strength workouts

in #dtube5 years ago

Hi everyone!

Hope you're all well!
Welcome to my video made exclusively for D.Tube.

With my August running challenge over, I've been trying to repair the damage I did to myself (plantar facisitis) with strength building exercises... but it's important to transition slowly because strength work puts a huge strain on your muscles, tendons and nervous system.

The slow transition is super hard for me though, I just want to throw myself into it and I've found that I'm ending each day with way too much energy and no way to expend it. I know it sounds weird, but it's a really big problem for me.

With tendon issues, it's important not to stop those exercises completely, the shock of the change can also exacerbate those same issues, so I've reduced running from every day to 3 times a week. It's still rough on the heels, and I'm definitely feeling that pain each morning, but I understand it might take a few months to work through it.

Still, I'm excited to be doing strength work, especially as it seems winter has come early. It's super dark in the mornings now and staying in my Ninja shed to exercise seems way more appealing.

Thanks for watching!

Hey Bro, you know I always have useful information. I had a similar issue a few years ago. The one thing I found that could get my heart rate up the same as running was the rowing machine.
Secondly, I have suffered from Plantar Fasciitis as well and have been running with Hoka One One running shoes which have helped due to the massive amount of cushioning they have:

Hey Vince! Absolutely I know that, without fail man! So I actually did try the rowing machine lately, and have done lots of rowing in the past. Completely agree that it's a great way to cardio up without overloading any particular limbs.

However, with my Climber's Elbow, I did struggle with it. The repetitive bending motion of the elbow wasn't great... although, now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if an underhand grip might have made a difference. I'll have to check that out, thanks man!

Hmmm, super interesting. I haven't heard of the Hoka One One before... thanks, I'll have to see what they've got for me!

Thanks dude!

I have had plantar fasciitis myself and it’s really painful and frustrating. Hang in there! Strength and reduced running sounds like a good strategy.

Thanks Mare!

Yeah, I think it's really the only way. I used to play Indoor Soccer 3-4 times a week, and it was fine for years, but when I started doing training a couple of times a week as well, it flared up and took nearly a year to sort itself out. I tried all sorts of methods and devices, but I do think it was strength training that eventually sorted it out, so I'm confident I'll get through it.

I ran yesterday and didn't wake up with sore heels today, so it's definitely getting better.
