Citadel mountain in Amman

in #travel9 years ago (edited)

Temple of Hercules, Roman times, Roman occupation started in 30BC

Rising above modern day Amman in Jordan lies the Citadel mountain. The mountain is littered with archeological remains, from as early as the Neolithic period. Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Umayyad periods of inhabitation can be discovered.

Umayyad palace, AD 661-750, muslim rule ended the Byzantine in 661 AD

The mountain also houses the archeology museum, with finds from all the periods with a nice collection of fossils and early human tools.

Later Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, 6700-6500 AD

Even a bronze-age cave, makes this sight complete.

As for the views, i made me some somber wintertime pictures,

showing present day Amman from all directions.

With a view over the Roman Theater that lies in the heart of the city. The theater was build in the reign of Antonius Pius, 2nd century.

And houses 6000 people.

View on the mountain from the Roman Theater.

Other inhabitants on the mountain; Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians and Greeks who called the city Philadelphia.
A townname Civilisationplayers might remember.
