Wildflower series ~ Vernonia Sutherlandii
Vernonia belong to the daisy family and although we usually think of daisies as having petals around the outside of the flower, some of them don't. The daisy family are classified as such because each flower is actually a cluster of tiny little flowers that together resemble a single flower. You can see that principle in action on the left, where the individual flowers are still opening and the tiny purple parts are acually the petals.
Another early bloomer, this plant is rising out of the dried remnants of last season. As far as I know, this one doesn't have a vernacular name. V. sutherlandii is not used medicinally although other species in this genus are.
Can'y beat the color.

We also have many flowers in which the flowers are purple.
