Wild Fruits: Mobola plums

in #fruit8 years ago

There are many edible wild fruit and berries growing around on the hill although I noticed an interesting phenomenon: the rains came late this year but it has rained fairly well and the trees have barely borne fruit but the bushes and ground fruit are plentiful this year, yet I didn't see any ground fruit last year, when it didn't rain much and yet the trees were full of fruit. It's sad to me that the previous inhabitants of the area such as monkeys, baboons and porcupines aren't around to eat it any more although monkeys are a real nuisance and baboons downright dangerous. Ground fruits like these would especially be eaten by porcupines.

My neighbour always looks at me in horror when I indulge my love of eating wild fruit I find growing on the hill. He always says "but I'm sure it's full of worms!" and I say, so what! I got him to try the plums but the verdict was "too weird". To me, it tastes unlike any other fruit I've ever eaten but the closest I can come to describing it would be like a fruit salad of yellow apple like Golden Delicious, banana and mango. When you eat them when they are bright orange, they are also slightly fermented and you get a warm glow in the pit of your stomach, similar to the sensation of drinking ginger beer. If you eat them when they are grey, they aren't fully ripe and they have a cream of tartar aftertaste but when they are yellowish, they are perfect. I'm going to scatter more seed closer to the house and see if anything germinates.

tambien me gusta las frutras silvestres, aunque cada vez son mas pocas

I must admit that for the first time I see such ground fruits like these on the picture. Thank you very much for picture and for interesting information. I am glad to learn and to see new things :)

Sure, it's the best idea. Try to preserve these fruits. Many birds may arrive, as well as some porcupines.
I would love to live where I can see these species up close.
For my wooded land, there are only rabbits and sometime, I saw a deer.
I wish you luck in the sowing of seeds.
Greetings @nikv.

hahahaha good luck, hope they grow

I'm envious! It would be a dream for me to just go and pick fruits in the nature or to grow them yourself in your yard. Unfortunately it isn't really possible where I live. Well, some fruits might succeed like apples, but not many.

That is one disadvantage to living in colder places. Most people don't eat wild fruit but gardens with mulberry, fig or avocado trees are a common sight here.

But you should be able to pick wild mushrooms? I'm envious of that ;)

Okay! Avocado trees, wow, that would be something! Avocado is so expensive here! :/. Yes, we have a lot of mushrooms during Autumn. It's nice! :)

You would have a cornacopia of native fruits to choose from if you could reseed them . You may also call the jungle critters back to your place. Are there no snakes there in your area to be concerned about?

There are snakes around but they aren't the highly venomous ones. This is a tiny little oasis of wilderness very close to the city so unfortunately the wild creatures won't be coming back unless they can fly.

Oh that’s good . Is this a planned garden or a wild overgrown place that you like to explore?

It is public land bordering my property that has been designated a nature reserve. I reintroduce missing indigenous plant species to my garden, try and control invasives and spread local indigenous seeds around in the public part

Is this around the house you bought? Becaue if it is.. I told you, you found a treasure!
You can always tell your neighbour worms are a source of protein hahaha!

Yes they are. That's ok if my neighbour doesn't like them, it means there are more plums to share with the others who like them as much as I do

And more plums to you of course!

And that will cause an upset stomach ;)

LOL! Not if you eat them consciously?

Many wild fruits start fermenting quite quickly so they should be eaten as soon as they are ripe and it is best to share if there are a lot

couldn't get any fresher or organic! feel free to follow me as I will and upvote your future content

i live in the tropics. I have a beach forest farm. I am not quite in the tropics but in a hot, drier country so the plants here prefer lower rainfall and are well adapted to local conditions and soils so they may or may not grow in your part of the world. I will post a wild berry tomorrow

ITS HOT dry here too ith low rainfall...hats the name of that berry please thans

Berry is Diospyros Lycioides. The plant in the post is Parinari Capensis
