Rhombophyllum Dolabriforme or Elkhorn plant

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

This mesemb also gets a name from Greek: Phyllon means leaf and rhombos means lozenge, referring to the rhomboidally shaped leaves. Dolabriforme means hatchet-shaped although I think that they look like tiny hands. Botanical terminology with mesembs is quite a mess, some of them are named after prominent botanists and others have greek or latin names that are mostly descriptive. It gets messy. This plant family usually just gets called "vygies" in vernacular languages. The word vygie means "little fig" in Afrikaans and refers to the seed pods, which do look like tiny figs
