George Papanikolaou / Pap test

George Papanikolaou is the person who discovered the Pap smear or Pap test

Τhe Pap test is the early diagnosis of cancer of the cervix and of the endometrium of the uterus and he gave life to the women of all world who had this cancer.

He was born o 13 May 1883 in Kymi,Greece,

He entered in 1898 at the Medical School of the University of Athens at the age of 15.

He received his degree in 1904, at the age of 21 years.

In 1907,he went in Germany, for higher education and he chose the field of biology.

On 15 September 1910, he married Andromachi Mavrogeni.

In 1912,he participated in the Balkan wars.

The first work was France. There was working in Oceanographic Institute of Monaco.

when the war ended , in 1913, he departed
with his wife for America,

At first he worked as an employee in a carpet shop.

Τhen he worked as a journalist in a Greek newspaper.

He earned a position with at the Columbia University Anatomy Laboratory and later a post at Cornell University in New York.

Then he became a professor of the anatomy and histology of the medical school of the New York University.

After long research in 1954, he published the monumental work "Atlas of Exfoliative Cytology" consolidating new medical specialty.

Today the Pap test is used worldwide for the early diagnosis of cancer of the cervix and of the endometrium of the uterus.

In November 1961, he left from New York and he took a new position at Institute for Carcinology at the Miami.

On February 19, 1962 He died.
