Water tank project
Alright!!! So first project to set up my HERM lab!!!
HERMS for Heat Exchanger Recirculating Mash System
The Goal is to use the recirculation to either keep the temperature or raise it during the mash process.
Why controlling the temperature is so important?
The way the alpha and beta enzymes are released will define the body of the beer. The lower the mash is, the dryer the beer and lower sugar will be extracted, the higher the mash is usually the thicker the taste will be. The deal is to get the right balance, and it all starts by having and keeping the temperature right for 60 to 75 min.
HERMS water tank
The water tank will heat up my water that will be send to the mash kettle, then it will be refilled with water to be used to keep the mash at the right temperature by having a stainless steel coil in it in which the wort will circulate and be heated to keep the mash at the right temperature.
So I had my heating element for over 4 months, set-up a space in my new apartment as you know, now it's time for some DIY project, so let's do it.
Setting Electical Element to a water kettle
Electricity and water don't really go well together, so it is quite a tricky project to make it work. A ruler, a power drill and the knock-out punch kit from amazon that is really worth it, I'm not done using it.
Now the top
Since I'm not brewing big quantity, I'm suffering from the lack of space. Since the coil need space between every twist to be properly heated, I had to fit a part of it underneath the heating element. This way I made a partial removable lid so coil stay in, but I got to dismantle few hardware to remove the lid... That was the simplest solution I found.
Time to test for leak
After putting it all togheter, time to test it. Result? not ready to brew. It happen that the o-ring seal they send me with the heating element doesn't fit properly so I had a leak from the power box which is not good at all. So I order a set of fatter O-ring at the same time I ordered my brew kettle, I'll be able to set them both at the same time.
Looks like you are ready for the summer! ;0)
Not yet but we're gettin there 😉
You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:
It should be which instead of wich.Tx budy!
