Exploring The Roots of Cordova: Buagsong

Buagsong, we all did hear rumors about how this small barangay in the Municipality of Cordova got it's very wondering name "Buagsong". Barangay Buagsong is rich in sea foods. They have this kind of eel that has already become as one of there specialty also known in bisaya as "Bakasi", they are also rich when it comes to various types of crabs like "kasag" and "Lambay" in bisaya. And many more.
Buagsong is a very small but prestige barangay in the Municipality of Cordova.
The Barangay has an area of 681, 859 square meters. On the years 80's and 90's only few had aquired title deed of their land property in this barangay. People in the barangay have been influenced by the Spaniards and American tradition and culture. The barangay had already adopted the influenced from the Spaniards tradition on having a fiesta, this is the reason why the Barangay has annual fiesta with a lot of activities during its fiesta and the highlight of the activity is Retreta. "The bayle" with a numerous number of visitors from other barangays and even political person from the province of Cebu and Lapu-lapu City.

The major source of income of the people living in the Barangay is "Pamakasi" what they call in Cebuano dialect. Mostly the wife of the fishermen will be the one who sells their catched Bakasi to the Public Market or walking it to other neighborhood. At least ten women or wife would bring the Bakasi and other seafoods to Carbon Market in Cebu City to sell it and have bigger income. Then after the selling process they auomatically buy some groceries and food supplies for their family daily needs and wants.

The Barangay is known to be where Bakasi's or Ell in English (aphrodisiac) are from the most wanted delicacy from the Municipality of Cordova.

The Origin of the Name "Buagsong"

After interviewing few locals around the barangay. Only 3 matched the same exactly answer. They have something in common for their answers. The 3 of them are old. The oldfolks living in barangay Buagsong.

They say that the Barangay is also known to be the place of Ingko Ayong the Chieftain of the place. They say Ayong's nickname was "Song". Song had a wife they live harmoniously and as like normal folks they catch fish for their food, they plant crops, they raise chickens and they bare children. Living a simple life.
One day "Song's" wife was bored and maybe nothing comes up to her mind but to break up with her Husband Ingko Ayong or also known as Song. So the next day Ingko's wife was eager to tell Ingko about what she is feeling and that she wants to break up with him.

Ingko's wife walked from their house to where Ingko is and his co-leaders are having a meeting of what would be the best name of there place that is soon to become barangay. When Ingko's wife arrived suddenly everyone stop and look at Inko's beautiful wife. So Ingko's wife approach Ingko and said to "Song"(nickname) right away that she wants to break up with him.

In Cebuano she told him loudly and clearly. " BUAG NATA SONG". Song's world suddenly stoped and Song cried. Song's wife left. Then one person asked Song what happen and this is the question in Cebuano dialect. "BUAG SONG?" The other leaders heard what the man ask to Song and shouted. "That's it! "BUAGSONG". Ingko said what?! His co-leader said. We like the sound of that and so Ingko agreed. So they name the place BUAGSONG.

The Barangay Buagsong became a Barangay in the year 1863. Declared as one of the Barangay of the Municipality of Cordova. The population in the previous years was only 2,685 both male and female including the children. The Barangay aquired its first education in 1950 through the effort of the Bureau of Education. Holding Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes by renting a small house to accommodate its daily classes for the children of the Barangay.

Now Barangay Buagsong is improving and now has their own elementary school and Barangay Hall. A basketball court. A covered court. A set of staffs and officers. And now, known to be the biggest supplier for Bakasi.
