How and Why I became Vegan

in #veganism7 years ago (edited)

My journey towards veganism was not a very long one. It started in March of this year when I moved to Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan. It was not something I really sat and contemplated for any extensive period. It was not based on morals or ethics or anything of the sort. It happened because I fell ill. I was stricken with an autoimmune disease called ulcerative colitis. I have written more about this below. First, I will talk about how ill-equipped modern medicine is to look at treatment through the lenses of holistic healing.

For me, it started with the worst diarrheal pains I had ever had. At first, I thought it was another stomach ailment that would pass. If it did not I would just take some medicine and be fine. But my diarrhea persisted throughout the day. In fact, I had to leave work early that Monday. I will spare the details of what transpired, but just say I went to the bathroom over ten times within twenty-four hours.

The following days, after numerous visits to the doctor, and after chugging down pill after pill, my condition worsened and I ended up in the hospital for almost two weeks. Unable to eat I was placed on a drip. I only received half of my required caloric intake. Within this time, I lost almost 20 pounds or a little under 10 kilograms. In the hospital, I was fed a steady diet of meats and other animal products.

While it did not set off much in the way of alarm bells, a part of me wondered why I was given this heavy food to eat, seeing that my stomach was not in the best shape. I ate it nonetheless (some of it).
After numerous tests and continually taking pills. The doctor discharged me. His last words to me were:
“I am not certain what is happening to you, but if you get sick again, come back and we will treat you.” I received an appointment for the next week and placed it on my calendar.

Within an hour of going home, my diarrhea returned. Frustrated, I went on the net and did some research. Every mainstream article I read said it was not possible to cure UC. It was after stumbling on an article written in the nineties on an obscure website that I am cannot find and to this day I am still searching for, that led me to Dr. Sebi. I dove into his writings and speeches, however, his philosophy seemed a bit too radical for me. Despite this I eliminated dairy and meats. I, however, stuck to fish.

As you can imagine, the symptoms persisted, though not as intensely as first. But then, I did further research and got firsthand account of how some persons cured this malady. Instead of every day, I got a flair up maybe once every two weeks. Tired of being ill I got up one Saturday, dumped all the fish I had and headed to the supermarket where I stocked up on fruits and vegetables.

I won’t lie and say that it has been smooth sailing. But it has been the best decisions I have made concerning my health. I have regained my health.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

According to britannica.com: Ulcerative colitis, inflammation of the large intestine (colon), especially of its mucous membranes, characterized by patches of tiny ulcers in the inflamed membranese. The most common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Other symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, and loss of appetite. Ulcerative colitis tends to become chronic, with sustained fever and weight loss; complications and death may result. Specific causes, such as amebic or bacillary dysentery, are rarer than unknown or multiple causes. The condition is treated with sulfasalazine, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, antibiotics, or, in severe cases that cannot be controlled with medication, by surgical removal of part, or the entire colon.

My problem with the last sentence

You realize that there is no mention of cure here. One may think that this is a one off, however, after combing through the data base of conventional medicine, I found the conclusion to be unanimous; UC can only be treated, it cannot be cured. I read and listened with horror, the stories of many people living with this disease. The most chilling one was about a woman who developed cancer and had her entire colon removed only to develop the disease again.
Though most people will not get to this stage, the fact that conventional medicine does not provide an alternative speaks to the narrow-mindedness of the profession. Had I not been introduced to Dr. Sebi, Dr David Klein, and the countless others who testified about the merits of a plant-based diet on YouTube, I too would still be taking fifteen pills per day. Yes, you got that right fifteen pills per day. Five for breakfast, five for lunch, and five for breakfast.

I guess this is where I should give a disclaimer and say that I am not a medical doctor, and hence not qualified to offer medical advice. I am simply giving an account of my experience and narrate those who have used veganism to cure their condition.
I must add that this approach is not limited to UC, but I have heard the testimonies of many sufferers of irritable bowel diseases use veganism to cure themselves. I am happy to say I am one of them, and this is my testimony.

What's Your Blood Type?

Guessing from your story, I'd have to say it's probably the "A" type. You might want to take a minute and check your foods with this search engine. Check the foods you used to eat, and then check the types of fish you were eating and still having problems with. I wouldn't be surprised to find most of them were on your avoid list.

Glad to Hear

you're doing much better. Having dealt with digestive issues myself, I share your relief. :) Give yourself a year and then slowly introduce fish listed as beneficial for you. Without animal proteins, you'll run in to other issues down the road. All vegan's look like heroin junkies, after a few years, with the "A" blood type taking the longest to look that way. We requires the least meat. lol

Sorry you had to find the gaps in medical information the hard way.

Go Be Awesome!!

Thanks for this. I really appreciate it. I think I am Type O though. I will check it out nonetheless.

If you're 'O' you'll definitely want to get back to eating meat. The O blood type looks like a junkie the quickest. Weak nails, unhealthy hair and a crabby attitude is fairly common with O blood type vegans.

Be Awesome

The whole 'blood type diet' thing has been pretty thoroughly debunked.

Actually, it hasn't. And... when you go to look for reviews of people who've tried it, only the ones who've paid attention to body pH and parental blood types are having superior results. You'll find plenty of people who've tried it improperly and failed. The science has not been debunked either.

My wife and I have been working with this for over 10 years now, it's definitely something to pay attention to. Thanks for stopping by though. :)

Go Be Awesome!

Well I am glad that it is working for you. But I have heard that it has debunked - from several angles and personally I don't believe that any person needs to be eating meat. The fact that we like other frugivorous/omnivorous animals and develop atherosclerosis when consuming meat(amongs several other glaring biological indicators, such as intestinal length ratio, types of enzymes present in our saliva, etc.)
Honestly I am not 100% sure what blood type I am. But I definitely do not experience any sort of 'looking like a junkie'... and also just a thought-have you tried going vegan? Because there are reports of 'type o' vegans out there who 'felt great' but then upon going vegan, felt even better. I have to concur about feeling better since going vegan. But I guess it's pointless to talk about my case in the context of this debate until I actually find out blood type. Until then... I'm over it and even though I don't necessarily agree with your ideas about diet, I'll still give you a follow... most of your posts are still of interest to me . Go be awesome as well. 👊

I'll simply be glad to see you continue to improve. :) Life is so wrong with digestion issues in the way.

Blood type diet is quackery. It's been scientifically debunked.

Actually, there's over 100 years of science backing it up. Interesting to see all the people who say it doesn't work. I can't find a one of them doing it correctly, no wonder it doesn't work for them. Keep in mind, most people think white toast isn't made from wheat. Most people also do cursory research and post replies like yours.

Go Be Awesome! :D
