Can Calculus Help Your Basketball Shot?

If calculus can be used to find slope and velocity, can’t it be used to find the perfect arc of a basketball shot?

Let’s just focus on a foul shot. It is from the same place all the time. It’s from a static position. Math should be able to calculate the percent arc that you should throw the ball at. I realize that this is only in theory and in reality there are human variables that will make it difficult to replicate.

With all of this being said, I feel like it’s a very interesting way to help make math more interesting to sports oriented students like I was.
