Traveling with the Family: Days 1 and 2

So far the vacation has been a success for my family keeping me as disconnected as I think I can be! However, it is so funny to reflect on my approach at life these days as I find my self taking pictures and thinking of posts to write and share here on Steem. So while I go and have these great experiences, my mind is how great some will be to share. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to really study what a real Travel blog looks like to share some of these photos. So, I will make a somewhat sub-amateur effort to share my travel so far!

I find myself in Cartagena, Colombia which is coastal city that has grown over the years. As you can see from the image, we landed and I was immediately bombarded with messages from the family to see if we were ok as minutes before there was an Earthquake in Colombia. My hearts out to those impacted but thankfully it was a non-event for us here up further North. My wife has made all the plans so I literally have no idea what I am walking into and have started to find out slowly which will forcefully change my plans here later this week. We were invited by friends whom have a place here so I thought it would be a great adventure to experience with the family.

Since we have lived many years before in Puerto Rico, the climate was very familiar to us. What was interesting is that the culture was very familiar as well. I have been to Colombia before for work but to Bogota and felt that while similar, it was notably different than the island life. Being a coastal city, I can really relate to the people and the surroundings around me. It was incredible to see how the city is well organized and the architecture is impressive as they have built these residential towers around the bay. I immediately feel in love with the bay as they had a walk way for my morning runs! I didn’t post the picture yesterday for @actifit but here was one.

I had some great views during the run as you could see how the city has evolved over time. It has become the fourth busiest port of Latin America. The amount of containers, ships, and cranes seen entering is quite impressive as I could compare to others that I have seen in my travels. You can also see how the architecture has evolved from the traditional Spanish forts and towns to the no towering building in fresh white paint. One thing I have appreciated for the first time in my travels across Latin America was the lack of traffic which is more than welcomed considering how bad it gets in other cities.

The first adventure for the family was a boat ride to a local island off the coast called Tierra Bomba (still unsure of the translation as the literal one is Land of the Bomb but could be Dance too). It was an interesting 10 minute boat ride that hundreds were doing as the beach on the island is known for some great music and food. To my surprise, we landed on the island to spend the day at a private residence on the island! It was a amazing view with a great beach for the kids to enjoy while we could enjoy comfort nearby. Food was awesome and went for a walk with my daughter to explore the beach and look for rocks and seashells she wants to take back to some friends.

An interesting experience is how the tourism economy gets going here as everything is based around the services that can be provided. The boat ride was a service to get to and from the island. There were motorcycles that would offer lifts around the island. There were also rentals that ranged from watercrafts to bodyboards that helped keep most of the kids and young adults entertained. Even for the adults there were offered a number of options from getting cocktails from local bars and even massages on the beach which I happily took for my feet after the morning 5K run I did. It was a tourist’s dream and an overall great day.

Another member of the family came towards the end of the day with their own boat so that we can have a much more comfortable ride back to the mainland where we were able to see some of the great skyline the city has to offer. Unbelievably, the day wasn’t over as we got back to residence to a full course dinner that was waiting for us. My family is certainly in awe with the amazing experiences we are having thanks to the great people here and their hospitality as well as the great city that surrounds us. I am ending day 3 as I write this while the family gets ready for dinner in the old town center where we will also be tomorrow.

Greetings my friend! Trying to catch up a bit and was happy to read along with how you are doing on your vacation.

”However, it is so funny to reflect on my approach at life these days as I find my self taking pictures and thinking of posts to write and share here on Steem. So while I go and have these great experiences, my mind is how great some will be to share.”

I smiled at this, as I could definitely relate. On my trip, I found myself stopping to take some picture I was passing, which would not have been my normal practice prior to being on the Steem blockchain writing about it. Good in some ways, as it forced me to capture more images and video to reinforce memories. At times, I wasn’t sure about it, as it felt a little too close to work and meeting deadlines … 😊

”Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to really study what a real Travel blog looks like to share some of these photos. So, I will make a somewhat sub-amateur effort to share my travel so far!”

I thought you did fine. I’ve left a few tips below …

Your description of the city of Cartagena and “Land of the Bomb” island … 😉 … were fun to read, picturing you and your family enjoying it. As well as your eye for all of the business activity present in the area. It is a good thing to know there is some prosperity in that part of the world. In nearby Venezuela, God knows, they are doing very poorly …

Glad to know you are enjoying a great time away @newageinv. I hope it will ultimately be a great lifetime memory for both you and your family!

P.S. To reach the travel community on the Steem blockchain, the recommended tags I got from a “seasoned veteran” were #travelfeed and #traveldigest. My 5 tags, during my R2R series of posts were - #travelfeed #traveldigest #photography #life #blog. Also, when you can tie them to one location, like Cartagena in this post, you want to “pin it” to SteemitWorldMap. Overall, these were the best supported posts I’ve written on the Steem blockchain.

P.P.S. Speaking of “best supported,” appears you’ve done something right in the eyes of BlockTrades. Good for you! 👍

Thanks! I continue to take pictures and writing notes on how to share on a post or two! Thanks for the tips as they will surely be helpful over the next couple of days!

t called Tierra Bomba (still unsure of the translation as the literal one is Land of the Bomb but could be Dance too).

Really good question, the literal translation is indeed land of the bomb, never heard bomba being used as dance before, only in that bomba song

“Bomba y Plena” is a folk dance and music tradition from the Caribbean that I recall.

Great to hear about that. And also nice picture view

Enjoy the time with the family!
